Gorontalo, Dec 5 (Antara) - Environment and Forests Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar has said the Gorontalo province is now the third conservation province in Indonesia after West Papua and East Kalimantan.

"Gorontalo is the third province to have declared itself as a conservation province. This is a step to be proud of for a province which exploits its natural resources wisely at a time when the international community is seeking to anticipate the impact of climate change," the minister said here on Monday.

She added that at the 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP22) on climate change in Morocco two weeks ago, Indonesia expressed its commitment to enhance real action to deal with climate change.

According to her, this commitment is important because Indonesia is the most vulnerable country to the impact of climate change because it has 17 thousand islands and nearly 65 percent of the population lives in coastal areas.

"Happily, we convey to the world Gorontalo`s efforts to save its people, the nation and the world," she stressed.

Furthermore, she explained that conservation is a measure to preserve environment even while deriving benefits from it.

The goal is to protect the biodiversity, preserve the ecological processes and protect the rare flora and fauna.

"Gorontalo has a unique and rare biodiversity, and also has certain conservation areas, all of these factors making the province suitable as a conservational province," the minister noted.

Gorontalo has a number of conservation areas, namely Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park in Bone Bolango, Nantu-Boliyohuto Wildlife in North Gorontalo, Gorontalo and Boalemo.

In addition, it also has Panua Nature Reserve and Tanjung Panjang Nature Reserve in Pohuwato, Popaya Mas Raja Nature Reserve in North Gorontalo, as well as Tangale Nature Reserve in Gorontalo as well as mangrove forests.
